What does a Postpartum Doula do? (and what they don't do)

A Postpartum Doula is a trained professional that offers non-medical physical and emotional support to a new mother and the rest of the family. Postpartum Doulas can offer breastfeeding support, newborn care, assistance for birth parents recovery, family nurturing, instruction to mum and/or other family members in the care of a newborn and even some light household maintenance, including laundry, cooking and shopping. The Postpartum Doula’s job is to make the transition to parenthood easier for new parents, to help mum during her recovery period and to ascertain what the family needs help with and provide the instruction.

It's important to note that a Doula is a non-medical professional that forms part of your pre and post natal team. We cannot advocate for the birthing parent or family, but we empower them with evidence based resources to ensure they make informed and empowered decisions.

Do you do Home Visits?

Yes! I do only on location appointments. But that location can be of your choosing. Most frequently I come to clients homes to assist and empower them in their own living space. This is especially important in the early days and weeks when mastering breastfeeding. But I also arrange consultations and meet ups in public locations if that suits the needs of the client.

Can I book Postnatal or Breastfeeding Support, in advance, whilst I'm still pregnant?

Yes! It’s simple. Let me know your Expected Due Date (EDD) and I will pencil you in starting from two (2) weeks prior to your EDD, until you’re actual delivery. You then just have to let me know when you bundle of joy has arrived and your booking is then confirmed.

For example. Your EDD is Monday 19th October. You plan for a ‘Postpartum Consultation’ the day after you get home from hospital. You actually deliver on Friday 9th October. After you let me know the amazing news, your first consultation will be confirmed as Monday 12th October (or 13th if CSection).

What Happens if ...

I think I am ill with an infectious disease? Can you still support me?

My clients, and my families, safety are of the utmost importance to me. I wear masks throughout home visits and take hygiene very seriously - if I can find a way to continue supporting you face to face I will, but please take note of my standard terms and conditions in the event of infectious diseases.

All parties to the booking contract must at all times adhere to any and all applicable regulations and laws in regard to Infection Control and Prevention, including but not limited to Covid-19.

In the event that you, or any members of your households are, or may be reasonably expected to be, carriers of any infectious diseases any and all home visits will be suspended for fourteen (14) days pending evidence of full recovery. Likewise, I will always inform you if I, or any member of my household, are or may be reasonably suspected to be, carriers of any infectious diseases, and the same time frame and refund policy applies.

I will always offer to convert to virtual consults and every effort must be made by both parties to fulfil the agreed contract hours but should this not be possible fifty percent (50%) of the remaining billing period may be reimbursed to you.

I need to reschedule an appointment for another reason (other than illness)?

I know that in the first few weeks postpartum there are a lot of appointments that might pop up in your diary, from paediatricians, obstetricians to Government agencies. I will always try to accommodate changes up to 24 hours before your Empowa consultation but requests to reschedule consultations can only be guaranteed if you do so via the Empowa @ Spaces App or Members Section of the website. All rescheduling should be done no less than 24 hours before your booked consultation.


Can I cancel my booking entirely?

If you’ve booked a Package you may reschedule your appointments within the validity period per the rescheduling terms above. Unless otherwise stated though, payment for any package is not refundable.

If you've booked a Single Visit and want to cancel, without rescheduling, then it is refundable subject to 24 hrs notice via the Empowa @ Spaces App or Members Section of the website.

Are you trained in First Aid?

Absolutely! I keep my training up to date and am currently certified by the American Safety and Health Institute for Adults, Children and Infants. Please click here to see my certification document >>>

But please note that I do not provide first aid training, but can refer you to competent and professional trainers.

Are you governed by an Ethics Board?
